MixCon 2018 Preview: Ariel Borujow – Staying on top of the Pop/R&B Mix

You heard right! MixCon 2018 is coming July 21-22, at the Manhattan Center in NYC. Producers, artists, audio engineers, and mixers – of course! – are invited to learn the latest and greatest studio techniques for mixing music and sound.

MixCon 2018 is presented by SonicScoop and the Deli Magazine. Now in its fourth year, MixCon presents six in-depth Mix Walkthroughs by some of the world’s top mixers, live and in person. Free to attend, it’s two days of terrific tips, tricks and networking at the Manhattan Center’s majestic Grand Ballroom and their two outstanding studios, the Lodge and Studio 7.

In this series, we’re taking a closer look at the mixers who will be sharing their secrets. Today, the focus is on Ariel Burojow. Ariel’s Mix Walkthrough is made possible by iZotope. Be right there with him at MixCon! Visit here to RSVP.

My Mix Angle: My style of mixing puts less focus on the technical aspect and more on the feeling of the record.

It’s important to get inside the mindset of the artists, producers or songwriters. What were they feeling when they produced it? What’s the message they are trying to convey? So ideally before a mix I have either one or a few conversations with the client to help piece all those questions together. From the beginning, it’s a collaborative effort and open conversations. This way you make yourself become a part of their process, NOT just a hired hand.

For Example: Visit here for my Spotify “Mixed by Ariel” playlist.

At MixCon, I’m Focusing On the Pop/R&B Mix Because: Again this goes back to the feel of the record. Today producers spend quite some time getting the “rough” mix correct. So when approaching your mix,  there is a correct way to communicate with the artists and or producers to help ensure that you are not trying to change their vision but help enhance what is there.  With the rough, they have for the most part captured the feel. You are there to take it to the next level. Not everyone works this way, but I enjoy it. You build a relationship with who you are working with.

Sneak Preview: I’ll be starting with the drums, bass, and vocals before other elements.  How does this lend to more aggressive mixes? Also using master bus processing early and why you constantly try new things on the Master to help enhance your workflow throughout the mix.

I Love Leading Audio Workshops Because… (why do you enjoy teaching and sharing your knowledge, especially live and in person?): Since I was an assistant I’ve always loved to share and exchange knowledge with my other peers. Now since the explosion of mix engineers, there are more people that are yearning for knowledge and also more and more techniques to learn!

Anything Else?  Very honored to have been asked again to do this. Really looking forward to a great event so have your questions ready!
