Record Store Day Picks: Fat Beats Brooklyn, Halcyon & Other Music

Today is Record Store Day! Here are the details on a few cool events going on around town:

Record Store Day is TODAY, April 16

Fat Beats Brooklyn is having an all-day, all-out celebration of vinyl culture and live music.

Transforming its DUMBO warehouse into a “hip-hop Woodstock,” Fat Beats Brooklyn will host performances by Neek the Exotic and Large Professor, The Stepkids, Chico Mann, Phenomenal Handclap Band, DJ Jab, DJ Center, !llmind, Amir, Eternia, Danny Dann the Beat Mann, Masta Ace, Maticulous, Kev Brown & Kaimbr, and Ray West.

The event commemorates the one-year anniversary of Guru’s passing with a Gang Starr tribute from Fat Beats Records own CSC Funk Band, featuring Mista Sinista on the scratches and many surprise emcees.

Not only will Fat Beats’ legendary vinyl library be on sale, but everyone in attendance will receive a 10% coupon for the re-launched FatBeats.com, a chance to win a free one-year subscription to Wax Poetics, and a chance to win a free 500-unit printing of vinyl jackets from Dorado.

Small Batch Brooklyn will be serving custom sandwich creations and brewing small-batch coffee, so bring your record bag, invite your friends, and head over hungry for a good time at Fat Beats Brooklyn.

Also in DUMBO, Halcyon the Shop will be hosting DJs including Scribe (I Love Vinyl), Amir (Kon & Amir / Rapster), Jon Oliver (eastvillageradio), OP!, The Twilite Tone, The Dahkter (halcyon) and Adultnapper. Halcyon’s also one of the locations of the sneak preview of “Pitchfork in 3D presents Deerhunter” and of course, special limited edition Record Store Day releases, records by the pound, and other special vinyl finds.

Meanwhile in Manhattan, Other Music will also be packed with great new releases, limited reissues and special one-offs, and will be giving away cool gifts and prizes, records, CDs and swag, including a backpack and a gift certificate for a pair of sneakers from our friends at Onitsuka Tiger for the first five customers who spend $250 or more.

Other Music will also host a special in-store performance by NYC’s own Regina Spektor. The first 100 customers who buy her new RSD 7″ Four from Far at Other Music on Record Store Day will get one ticket to see a private solo performance Regina is giving right next door to OM at 2 p.m. on Saturday. That’s the only way to see the show, so head on down early, get in line and buy her new RSD 7″ record.
