ShapeShifter Lab Live Music & Recording Complex Opens in Park Slope

A new 4,200-sq. ft. performance and production space has opened in Park Slope.

Co-founded by jazz bassist Matthew Garrison – son of Jimmy Garrison (bass player for John Coltrane) — and business partner Fortuna Sung, ShapeShifter Lab hosts nightly live performances, lessons and master classes, recording and session work, video capture, rehearsals and pre-production, showcases and private events.

ShapeShifter Lab main space

ShapeShifter Lab has reportedly been designed with versatility in sound, lighting and layout, to host “innovative artists who are looking for a flexible platform to present their work.” See video below.

The venue is equipped with a PreSonus StudioLive 24.4.2 mixing board running through a QSC house PA. And, according to house engineer William Stanton, for live recordings, they route audio into the control room, which is still under construction.

“The heart of the our recording setup is currently an RME Fireface UFX,” he notes. “We track up to 24 channels in Pro Tools 9 LE, but we are also outfitted for Logic 9 and Ableton Live 8. Artists are welcome to bring in their own equipment or use their gear in conjunction with our rig.

“Our mic closet consists of standard stage mics (various Shure/AKG vocal and instrument mics), but we also have some nice recording mics (Royer 121s, various GrooveTube tube and ribbon mics).”

Andrew Sheron, of Everyman of Parts

While ShapeShifter Lab primarily functions as a live performance venue, the facility frequently operates as a recording studio during the day and on venue off nights. Currently, Garrison is recording a new album in the space.

“We also have a range of instruments (including a Fischer Baby Grand piano) and amps to help get the sound the client wants,” Stanton adds. “We also offer the equipment necessary for basic video capture and editing.”

In March, ShapeShifter Lab will welcome Brooklyn-based band Everyman of Parts for a Thursday night residency. Led by multi-instrumentalist/songwriter (and SonicScoop contributor) Andrew Sheron, Everyman of Parts performs original music born of wide-ranging influences from classic rock-and-roll to Mongolian folk.

The Thursday night performances will feature a different opener each week, new songs, and an end-to-end performance of Traveling Time, Everyman of Parts’ recently released debut album.
