Reactable Launches Reactable Live! S4 Limited Series

Like a good-natured alien invader, Reactable first landed on the Earthly music scene in 2003. Now on the cusp of its 10 year anniversary, this utterly unique electronic musical instrument has a new addition to the lineup.

The company today announced the arrival of the new Reactable Live! S4 Limited Series, one of an easier-traveling type of Reactable. Available now, it features new – and presumably lower – pricing, although it’s still a significant investment at 6100 Euros, or $7894.62 at today’s exchange rates.

The Reactable Live! S4 Limited Series expands this distinctive  synth’s horizons.

For anyone who’s ever seen the Reactable in action, however, practically any price is worth considering. For those who are yet to experience it, the synth appears as a round translucent table that appears as a backlit display. By placing blocks called “tangibles” on the table, and interfacing with the visual display via the tangibles or fingertips, a virtual modular synthesizer is operated, creating music or sound effects.

Now, allow the creators to fill you in on what distinguishes their Reactable Live! S4 Limited Series:

“We continue to improve the rich visual and tangible experience of creating and performing music, making the connection between you, your music and your audience distinctive and exciting.

Designed to provide direct and intuitive interaction with sound through objects on a multi-touch enabled screen, it is perfect to play live and to unveil your creativity.

New features:
• Lighter table structure, that is faster assembling and more stable.
• The Reactable Core has better components which make the system more robust, reliable and lighter
• New Software version with high quality Timestretching and Pitchshifting
• New puck set with heavy duty anti abrasive coating.
• And more…

DESIGN CONCEPT

The Reactable Live! is the result of many years of research in the field of computer music and human-computer interaction. The Reactable Live! interface is clean and direct, without text lists or endless config menus, it puts the whole music creation process in the hands of the musician. Only by designing the hardware and software together could we create a completely new instrument that truly is a step ahead of anything else in the market.

HOW IT WORKS

The way a Reactable works is deeply inspired by modular analogue synthesizers, such as those developed by Bob Moog, and brings them to a whole new level by adding completely new concepts of sampling and digital effects processing. On the Reactable the modules are tangible objects placed on a multi-touch surface and identified by the computer through fiducials. They are managed automatically based on their types and affinities and on their proximity. This allows an intuitive approach to sound creation and control and makes it easy to work with.
