L.A. Event Alert: Studio Prodigy Master Class Series With Ryan Hewitt
Last week, SonicScoop visited Universal Mastering Studios in Los Angeles – the site of the new Studio Prodigy Master Class Series, which kicks off with its first session, led by Grammy-winning mixer/ producer, Ryan Hewitt (Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Avett Brothers, Harry Conick, Jr), later on this month.

Hewitt will teach on “Hybrid Mixing Techniques” in Session One, taking place on Saturday February 23, from 10AM-6PM. The class will be limited to 25 attendees, so click for more info, and reserve your spot today. Tickets are $500.
But back to the venue and our reason for mentioning that we visited Universal. The large rooms at Universal are ZR Acoustics “Virtuoso” environments, designed by Hanson Hsu of Delta H Designs. The design involves much acoustic science, best articulated by Hsu himself (read the Dec. 2012 SonicScoop interview by Bo Boddie), but the result is extreme sonic clarity and consistency throughout these rectangular rooms – whether you’re in the sweet spot, in the back corner, on the couch, etc.
So – perfect environment for a Master Class – the idea being that each of the 25 attendees will really hear everything Hewitt’s playing back from his session, and in detail with consistency no matter where they’re sitting in the room.
Hewitt will take the class through an entire session, covering every part of the mixing process from equipment setup and choice tools, to signal flow optimization, to building the mix and finding the right sound, to how he wraps it all up. See the entire outline here.
