10th Annual Guild of Music Supervisors Awards Winners Announced
The incredible impact of sound working perfectly to picture was celebrated in Los Angeles on February 6th, as The Guild of Music Supervisors (GMS) held their 10th Annual Award Ceremony. Over 1000 attendees convened at The Wiltern in Los Angeles to celebrate outstanding music supervision achievement in movies, television, games, advertising, and trailers for 2019.
Adding to the gravitas were recognition for Burt Bacharach and Bob Hunka, as Bacharach received the 2019 Icon Award, and Hunka received the Legacy Award. A three-time Academy Award and two-time Golden Globe-winning songwriter and composer, Bacharach received the Guild of Music Supervisors Icon Award to honor his notable creative achievements in storytelling for films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Alfie, Arthur, and Austin Powers.
Renowned country singer Emmylou Harris gave a surprise guest performance before presenting the Legacy Award to Bob Hunka. Hunka’s career spans managing a Symphony Orchestra (Edmonton), a mobile recording studio (Enactron), an independent record production company that included Anne Murray, Emmylou Harris and Johnny Cash among its clients (Happy Sack Productions), and Dolly Parton’s music publishing company (Velvet Apple Music). Hunka said in his acceptance speech, “My philosophy – how I sold it was: we can use the ear to fool the eye. The [big film scenes] will actually look better if there’s big music underneath. THAT is the power of music in film and TV.”
Special guest performers for the evening included Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Regina Spektor and the indie pop band Lola Marsh, both of which won awards. Awards presenters include Kristen Chenoweth, Michael Bolton, Daniel Ezra, Dash Mihok, Jay Roach, Reggie Watts, Spencer Paysinger, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian, Alex Winter, and Peter Gallagher.
The Guild of Music Supervisors is headed by current President Joel C. High. GMS is a non-profit organization that was founded in 2010 with the goal of preserving and promoting the critical role of the Music Supervisor within all forms of media. The Guild holds numerous educational and networking events throughout the year, including the annual State of Music in Media Conference at LA Film School.
