Inside DUMBO’s Vinegar Hill Sound With Guitarist Justin King (Video)
DUMBO, BROOKLYN: In October, SonicScoop hoofed over to Dumbo to chat with guitarist, songwriter and producer Justin King and check out his new recording studio, Vinegar Hill Sound.
Up to his elbows in gear and gypsum board dust, and surprisingly lucid after many an hour of hand-soldering, Justin sat down with us to talk about his recent relocation from Oregon and showed us around the studio still under construction.
Although a newcomer to DUMBO, Justin King is known internationally for his acoustic guitar style, which draws influences from Flamenco to Jazz, Celtic, Classical, African and Americana music. His work has been captured on a number of recordings: solo instrumental (his Le Bleu album), pop rock (Justin King and the Apologies) and an electro-acoustic project with Michael Manring.
A seasoned performer, Justin has toured with and opened for James Taylor, BB King, Diana Krall and Al Green, to name a few. He also recently produced an album for pop singer/songwriter, Leo London.
We returned to Vinegar Hill again in November to film more footage of the completed studio, with its 32-channel Toft ATB console, racks of outboard gear and large main live room. Here, Justin talks about his vision for Vinegar Hill, recording techniques and gear choices, his finger-style technique (and the guitars that make it happen) and more. Check it out:
