D.W. Fearn Launches VT-24 Four Channel Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamplifier
A true gentleman of audio, Mr. D.W. Fearn is into heavy metal.
We talk not of his taste in music (although Black Sabbath and Meshuggah may indeed grace his home stereo), but his audio designs. The latest proof is the company’s new VT-24 Four-Channel Vacuum Tube Microphone Preamplifier.
Inspired by his personal needs in his studio, the VT-24 is a four-channel version of Fearn’s VT-1/VT-2 mic pre, doubling the preamp capacity of that revered vacuum tube unit within the same amount of space.
According to D.W., the more compact design doesn’t come with compromises to the sound or features of the VT-2. The VT-24 uses the identical circuit and custom Jensen input and output transformers as all of the Fearn mic preamps, with eight total tubes and cool-running design that allows placement next to live mics. It sports four true VU meters, the same high-performance specs, and the identical audio signature of the VT-2.
Something must be different, right? Fearn notes that the meter switch has been eliminated in the VT-24. However, the 48V phantom power, 20dB pad, and special input selection for Low-Z microphones mirror those on a VT-1/VT-2.
The VT-24 is available now for $8300 MSRP. Visit this unit’s Web page for deeper specifications.
