Video Studio Tour: Magic Shop Studios

Justin Colletti visited the legendary Magic Shop recording studios this Thursday, and when he did, He brought a camera! Check out the first of our new studio tours on the SonicScoop video blog.

Owner, producer and engineer Steve Rosenthal walks us through this versatile and storied space in the Soho neighborhood of Manhattan. This studio has played host to artists including Foo Fighters, Sonic Youth, David Bowie, Norah Jones, Blonde Redhead, Coldplay, and many more.

In part 1, Steve and Justin give us a tour of the upstairs rooms, complete with custom Neve console and sliding partitions, and even hear some impromptu jams on tuned wine glasses, banjo and upright bass.

In part 2, Steve takes us to the downstairs studios, where restoration and mastering work is completed for artists including Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, Phil Spector, Tim Buckley and Erroll Garner. Here, you can get a glimpse of Jessica Thompson’s mastering suite and Matt Boynton’s mix room.
