1) Make myself mix at different volume levels, especially very quiet. At low volume I’ll focus specifically on the sound balances and which elements seem too loud and too quiet. At high volumes, everything sounds better and it’s easier to lose perspective on things that may be getting lost.
2) Make rough mixes early on, and save them, and refer back to them later when I think I’m just about finished. Although the “finished” mix is always “better”, there are lots of times I catch something good in that first rough mix that somehow got lost along the way (like, oh yeah, I had the guitar louder then and it sounded better). This gives me a chance to restore that thing, whatever it was, and improve the finished mix.
