Choice Gig: Richard Barone “Cool Blue Halo” 25th Anniversary Concert at City Winery, Friday May 4
One of NYC’s most devoted practitioners of songcraft and recording, Richard Barone, will be presenting a don’t-miss concert tomorrow, Friday May 4, at City Winery.
This special show sees Barone reassembling the original quartet behind his classic 1987 album Cool Blue Halo, a pioneering “chamber rock” work that skillfully blends classical, jazz, and art rock, and was recorded live in a single evening at the Bottom Line.
At City Winery, singer/guitarist/songwriter Barone will once again be backed by the acoustic ensemble of cellist Jane Scarpantoni, acoustic guitarist Nick Celeste and percussionist/keyboardist Valerie Naranjo.
For those unfamiliar, a listen to Cool Blue Halo is essential for its artfully engrossing display of haunting beauty, fragility, strength, expert musicianship and deeply soulful songwriting. On Friday, Barone and his band will recreate Cool Blue Halo in its entirety, along with very special guests and added songs, nearly 25 years to the day of the release of the original album.
Additionally, Friday’s performance will be recorded and filmed for CD and DVD release, which is due out in the Fall of 2012.
