Clear Channel Media to Purchase NYC’s WOR 710 AM

Although Clear Channel Media already owns five FM stations in the NYC market — 103.5 KTU, Q104.3, Z100, 106.7 Lite fm and Power 105.1 – a presence on the AM side of the dial was clearly important to the media giant.

NYC’s WOR 710 has a new owner.

That’s why the latest addition to Clear Channel’s 850 station stable is News/Talk station WOR 710 AM. Clear Channel announced today that it is purchasing WOR for an undisclosed price from Buckley Broadcasting Corporation – pending FCC approval.

With WOR in its pocket, Clear Channel now has an NYC outlet to move high profile programs to, such as those of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, if need be.

They’re getting some rich radio history in the bargain: WOR 710 AM was founded in 1922, and stands as New York’s oldest radio station. WOR’s list of pioneering moves include being among the first radio stations in America to use directional antenna to increase the scope and range of its broadcast, as well as being the first New York AM radio station to broadcast HD radio.
