Ears and Gear Reign at Burl Annihilation Tour Stop at Electric Lady Studios
As reported previously in SonicScoop, Burl Audio’s Annihilation Tour 2011 landed in NYC’s Electric Lady Studios last week.
A wide-ranging group of studio, mastering, mixing, live sound and freelance audio pros were on hand to enjoy the critical listening, amazing Cuban sandwiches, elote’ corn and Modelo Especial.
In Studio C, the Burl B80 Mothership, loaded with two BAD4 4 Channel transformered A/D cards and two BDA8 8 Channel D/A cards (for an 8-in, 16-out configuration) was compared with Digidesign 192 I/Os in a 16-output configuration.
“Two identical 16-fader ‘fader/pan only’ mixes were painstakingly calibrated channel for channel by Electric Lady staff and Burl Audio President Rich Williams to electronically match for a fair fight,” explains Blue Wilding of Audio Power Tools. “Pre-recorded multitrack live band material was played back through both systems simultaneously and attendees were allowed to switch between mixes using two master group fader ‘cut’ switches.
“This demo was mainly about comparing against a unit everyone’s very familiar with to start,” Wilding continues, “and proving that — even at the same level — the Mothership has a much stronger and musical sonic footprint.”
The B80 Mothership is the multi-channel version of Burl Audio’s B2 Bomber ADC and DAC. The B80 AD/DA converter has up to 80 channel capability with 10 card slots (with 2, 4 and 8 channel AD/DA cards) housed in a 4U chassis. Every ADC channel has a BX1 transformer and every DAC channel has the latest Burl Audio discrete op-amp, BOPA2, technology. (Visit Burl Audio for more tech specs.)
