Event Choice: “The Art of Scoring for Documentaries” – Tues. 5/28 in NYC
Documentaries are on the rise in the world of filmmaking, with the number of producers and subgenres all seeing consistent expansion.
The happy result: More opportunities for emerging and established composers to create music for picture. That’s why we’re excited about the upcoming seminar, “The Art of Scoring for Documentaries,” presented by The Society of Composers & Lyricists in New York (SCL in NY) on Tuesday, May 28th, from 7-9 PM. The location is at ASCAP’s offices on 1900 Broadway (and 63rd Street).
Admission is free for SCL and ASCAP members, $15 for non-members, and $10 for students. RSVP via email is required – for detailed instructions on how to register, see below.
Two top composers will lead the way: Wendy Blackstone (Paradise Lost 3, HBO’s “Alive Day: Home from Iraq”, Alzheimer’s Project) and Composer / SCL Steering Committee Member Chris Hajian (First Position, Unraveled, Nursery University).
Together, they’ll help to answer the questions:
What makes a great documentary score?
How does a composer write around narrative dialogue?
Why is the Director / Composer relationship so important to the story?
Blackstone and Haijan will discuss the craft of scoring for documentaries and the essential collaboration process between composer and filmmaker. Documentary film directors will also join the panel, providing insight into their side of the process and speaking to what they look for in a score.
