Hello fellow audio peoples and welcome to Free Friday issue 11! Consider this plethora of freeware a stocking stuffer from Santa, SonicScoop and heaven. Go ahead and take a look but it might be best to wait for Christmas morning.Or just count this as an early present – scroll down, click the link and go exploring!
Inside you’ll find a few sample packs, a synth and an EQ/channel processor plugin — this batch of freeware could even get old man Scrooge to grin. And with that, we’d like to wish you all happy holidays. Oh, and don’t forget to check your mix’s phase!
Thrillseeker XTC – EQ plugin by Variety of Sound
First on our list is an analog style EQ exciter that claims to bring the analog back into digital audio signal. The plugin is available for Windows only in VST format. Here is what Variety of Sound says:
“Bringing mojo back – Thrillseeker XTC is a contemporary exciter build around a true parallel analog style equalizer design. Thrillseeker XTC is all about adding weight, vibe and attitude back to the sound. It delivers all the character of an analog signal path and provides what digital processing usually is hard pushed to, including a rich low-end experience and that vibrant ‘expensive’ top-end.
At a glance:
- A unique take on a parallel analog equalizer design which includes full control about sonic color and mojo.
- Transient based processing to revive energy and vibe.
- Made for musicians and engineers to pleasingly enhance audio during the mixing or mastering stage.”
Frequency Shifter – by Full Bucket
Next up we have Frequency shifter which, incredibly, does as it’s name suggests! As the developers note though, “Do not confuse the Frequency Shifter with a pitch shifter!”. The plugin is available for Windows only in VST format. Full Bucket says:
“The Frequency Shifter is a VST™2.4 software effect for Microsoft Windows® written in native C++ code. The main features are:
- Frequency shifting up to ±5000 Hz
- Optional LFO with five waveforms
- Four frequency ranges, three mix modes
- Linked or individual control for both stereo channels
- Plug-in comes in 32 bit and 64 bit versions
- Fully compatible with SM Pro Audio’s V-Machine™
The Frequency Shifter shifts the spectrum of the input signal up or down along the frequency axis. This effect is also know as “Bode Frequency Shifting” or “Single Sideband Modulation”; IMHO one of the most underrated and ignored effects ever.”
Commodore 64 Synth Sessions DELUXE – Sample Pack by BPB
This sample pack is recorded from multiple versions of the old-school home computer. These samples are compatible to almost everyone out there. Here is just a sample of what BPB has to say:
“Commodore 64 Synthesizer Sessions DELUXE is the final release in the Commodore 64 Synthesizer Sessions sample pack series. It comes with 30 multi-sampled instruments which were recorded directly from three different versions of the Commodore 64 home computer.
The majority of the sounds in the sample pack are completely new, but I’ve also included re-edited versions of some of the sounds from the previous two releases.
Many users of the first two packs asked for a custom Kontakt interface with on-screen controls. So, I decided to ask Rhythmic Robot to join the project since these guys are the masters of turning vintage instruments into Kontakt sample libraries. Thankfully, they said yes and created a brilliant custom interface for Commodore 64 Synthesizer Sessions DELUXE!”

MHorse and MoJoe – EQ and Channel Processor by Terry West Productions
Fourth up is a duo of plugins from TWP. No details are given about the freeware but just one look at the interfaces and you’ll want to jump right in. The plugins are for Windows only and in VST format.
Tempest Vs MPC60 – Sample Pack by BoxedEar
Here we have a sample pack of synth drum sounds run through an MPC. What does that sound like? Find out in just a few clicks! Here is what BoxedEar says about the new sample pack:
“Two classic drum machines, both designed by “the father of the drum machine” Roger Linn. The MPC60 is a sampler first released in 1988 and is considered one of the major contributors to the development of hip hop music. The Tempest is a modern analogue/digital hybrid drum machine released in 2011 in partnership with Dave Smith Instruments.
We thought it would be fun to bring them both together by synthesizing pure analog drum sounds on the Tempest and sampling them into the MPC60 for that tasty 12bit digital crunch.
Pack contents: 90 WAV files”
Lastly is a synth from the excellent developers, u-he. The synth is driven by a single oscillator and some similar effects found in their popular Zebra synth. Podolski is available for Mac and Windows in VST format only. Here is what u-he says about their freeware:
“Podolski is a simple, CPU-efficient virtual analogue synthesizer. Basically a cut down version of FilterscapeVA with just one oscillator, one filter, one envelope and two LFOs, it also features a Zebra-style arpeggiator/sequencer plus chorus and delay effects.
Podolski’s specialities are the Click parameter (emphasizes the filter attack) and its ability to seamlessly morph between three waveforms (WaveWarp).”
