Free MOOC Course: Berklee’s “Introduction to Ableton Live” – 1st Session on Sunday Feb. 2nd
For many, this Super Bowl Sunday is the ultimate in sporting entertainment. For thousands of others, however, it represents the day before a killer new free online course from Berklee College of Music begins.
On Monday, February 2nd, “Introduction to Ableton Live” will commence, providing an essential new MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) via Coursera to the audio community. The MO here is all about peer review – in order to get your grade, you have to grade other people. In this style of learning, places like Berklee provide the platform and content, and the community itself carries the course along.
The movement is growing: over 1,000,000 people have taken Berklee MOOCs so far. With this latest one, students can learn Ableton Live’s most powerful tools and how to use them to take their musical ideas from conception to final recording.
Students who do not currently own Ableton Live 9 will be able download the free, fully featured Ableton Live Trial, which will allow them to save and export their work for 30 days. See the course site for full info on how to proceed.
Mega bonus!!! “Introduction to Ableton Live” was designed by Erin Barra, SonicScoop contributor and all-around Superior Being.

About the Course
In the past, Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) were programs used only by audio engineers with a highly specific knowledge base, on machines inaccessible to most people. But over the past 10-15 years, DAWs and the act of recording music have evolved from being a luxury of the few to being available to the masses. Ableton Live is one such application. Used by an extremely broad range of music creators, Ableton Live not only facilitates the work of engineers, producers, and writers in professional, home, and mobile studio settings, but it is also a powerful platform for musicians on stage, in the DJ booth, and elsewhere.
In this course, you will explore some of Live’s most powerful and useful functionality: MIDI programming, audio recording, warping and processing, looping editing, mixing, performing, file management, and troubleshooting. Meant to be a springboard for those who are new to Ableton Live and/or DAWs in general, this three-week course will provide you with a strong knowledge base for using Live to take your musical ideas from conception to final recording. The course breaks down the many barriers of entry into music technology and encourages all those who wish, to create fearlessly.
