Help “Source of Uncertainty” Celebrate Buchla 200e, DIY Modular Synthesis on 6/28, 7/7
The fascinating Buchla 200e and the art of DIY modular synthesis will be celebrated with two free New York City concerts, this coming June 28th and July 7th.
The “Source of Uncertainty” series is a collaborative initiative of New York-based curatorial organizations, Harvestworks and ((audience)), which is taking place as part of the River to River festival.
The first event will feature a modular synth fair where Buchla musicians will be interviewed for a program on “Art on Air.”
On July 7th, the NYC-based synthesis pioneer Morton Subotnick’s “Energy Shapes” will be realized in the live setting for the first time. This mode of composition-improvisation involves Subotnick feeding vocals into the Buchla 200e, manipulating these as voltages on the synth, and using Ableton Live to loop and play back as he prepares a new modular patch for the next energy shape.
Visit the SOU Website for the full roster of artists and performances, which should prove to be thoroughly engrossing for anyone who considers themselves a fan of analog or digital synthesis.
In addition, SOU, as a non-profit organization, needs help in raising $7,500 to stage these concerts. Those interested in contributing can help out via the Flexible Funding campaign on the SOU Wesite. According to the organization, the money will go to:
“1) Artist compensation for Morton Subotnick, Alessandro Cortini, Carlos Giffoni, Mark Verbos, Xeno & Oaklander, and Loud Objects. Participating artists are transporting their large synthesizer system, in Alessandro’s case flying out to the event, and preparing works specific to the event.
2) Event production costs include the speaker rental, lights, transportation of the large 200e cabinets, table and chair rental, lunch for interns. We are rigging a nontraditional event space and need additional filler speakers for quadrophonic (multichannel) experience. Equally important, we have to buy some wine and beer for June 28th!”
