Masque Sound (NJ) and Akustiks (CT) Upgrade Broadway’s New Victory Theater Sound System
The New Victory Theater on West 42nd Street recently completed a major upgrade to its sound system. The historic 111-year old facility collaborated with Akustiks, LLC, a Connecticut-based architectural & electro-acoustic design firm, and theatrical sound reinforcement/installation/design company Masque Sound (NJ) to design and install a new d&b sound system for the theater.

Now, Broadway’s NVT is outfitted with nineteen d&b D6 & D12 amplifiers to drive the system which consists of both line array and full range speakers, while a R1 system control was implemented to provide overall control over all speaker arrays. A Midas Pro3-IP digital mixing console, and three XTA DP 448 processors are used to drive the 26 speaker house system. A Shure UR4D wireless package provides the venue with flexibility in regards to miking visiting productions.
According to Masque Sound project manager Matthew Peskie, the decision to upgrade to a 5.1 surround system literally doubled the existing number of speaker placements, creating issues for mounting subs at a lower level, where there was no room for anchors. Philadelphia-based Sapsis Rigging was brought in to design and build custom cantilevers, which allowed the team to locate the speakers in the desired locations.
Akustiks and Masque Sound also renovated and partially replaced the existing intercom system with a ClearCom MS 704 main station, RM-704 4-CH remote station and headsets. Additionally, they oversaw the electrical work relating to the A/V system.
