“Masters from Their Day” Music Production Video Series Launches Episode 3, “The Library is on Fire” at Pie Studios
Some of NYC’s best studios, engineers, producers, and musical artists are being featured in a new web-TV series, “Masters From Their Day” (MFTD). Episode #3 of MFTD features Brooklyn indie-rockers The Library Is On Fire at Pie Studios, Glen Cove, NY.
In each webisode of this series, the featured artists, engineers and producer are challenged to complete the entire production of a song in one day — usually around 6 hours. Each session takes place in a world-class recording facility using an array of equipment, including Benchmark mic-preamps and A/D/A converters.
The premise of the series was inspired by the works of the legendary artists and production crews from the seminal age of music production. Many classic recordings were produced in single recording sessions by artists like Patsy Cline, Otis Redding, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and their engineers/producers Owen Bradley, Tom Dowd, Sam Phillips, and George Martin.
“Listening to a track from that time period, you really appreciate the talents and skills of the musicians, engineers, and producers for being able to create such effective records in a single day,” says Elias Gwinn, producer of “Masters From Their Day” and applications engineer with Benchmark Media Systems.
“The name of the series, ‘Masters From Their Day’ is a double entendre,” Gwinn explains. “It pays homage to these men and women and simultaneously alludes to the climax of each webisode – the mastered track from their day in the studio.”
The track from each webisode is mastered by 3-time Grammy-winning mastering engineer, Gavin Lurssen. The mastered track is free to download from the project’s site in redbook and high-resolution 24-bit formats. The HD videos are also free to watch, embed, stream and share.
The first part of each “Masters From Their Day” webisode follows the participants throughout the production and decision-making process for that session. In the second-part, the resultant final (mixed and mastered) track is heard in its entirety while seeing the real studio-performances of the actual music being heard in the recording.
“In this series, we wanted to honor our predecessors by reprising their style of work-flow,” explains Gwinn. “Its amazing to see what great artists and craftspeople can accomplish in a such a short amount of time.”
Benchmark Media Systems, Inc., makers of high-end mic-preamps and A/D/A converters, are the creative force behind the project, forging partnerships with the featured producers, engineers, studios, and artists to contribute to the new social media paradigm.
