MixCon started off with a live version of the SonicScoop Podcast on “The Future of Music Production”, hosted by Justin Colletti and featuring panelists Jon Bailey of iZotope, Marta Gospodarek of NYU, and mastering engineer Alan Silverman (l-r).
Following each main stage presentation, audience members had the opportunity to go into the studios with the presenters for intimate masterclasses and demos from sponsors. There was even a packed mix critique and listening session sponsored by PMC.
Mixing legend Tony Maserati payed a surprise visit to Colin McDowell of McDSP to help him show off the new APB-16 analog compressor for its first public audio demos.
Tony and Colin spoke to a large crowd of enthusiastic guests in the Manhattan Center’s “Log Cabin” studio.
Tony Maserati took the main stage on Saturday, presenting to a packed house, filling every seat and leaving standing room only in the back of the enormous “Grand Ballroom” at the Manhattan Center.
Tony gave a full 90 minute presentation on his philosophy, and even broke open some sessions to let us hear is approach to applying compression, EQ, reverb and effects to select instruments, sponsored by McDSP.
For those who couldn’t attend, all MixCon presentations were filmed and will be released every week for the next 6 weeks. To make sure you don’t miss any, subscribe at YouTube.com/SonicScoopVideo
Next up was Paul “Willie Green” Womack, who walked us through a creative, genre-bending alt hip hop mix with big guitars, saturated vocals and big fat drum souds.
Paul’s presentation was sponsored by Steinberg, the makers of his favorite DAW, Cubase.
Starting off Day 2 was Mike Major, who walked us through his meticulous process for mixing drums, starting from initial phase alignment all the way up to bus processing.
Mike’s talk was also sponsored by Steinberg, makers of his favorite DAW, Nuendo.
More in-studio presentations followed Mike’s talk, including a Cubase demonstration from Greg Ondo.
GRAMMY-winner Jeff Ellis took the stage next for an incredible, standout presentation on the big moves that really matter in mixing.
His presentation, sponsored by Sonarworks, filled the room and drew great questions from a captivated audience.
After Jeff’s presentation, a fortunate small group got to spend 2 hours with him during an intimate masterclass in the Log Cabin studio.
Multi-platinum mixer Dan Korneff gave the final main stage presentation. He cracked open a real mix from Breaking Benjamin in this talk—sponsored once again by Steinberg—showing off his fearless approach to mix bus compression and a whole lot more.
Afterwards, Dan gave a small group masterclass to a dozen lucky attendees, sharing more than two decades of music mixing wisdom.
In between presentations, the expo room was mobbed with curious attendees, seen here at the Splice and McDSP booths.
There were many first time sponsors, including EMC, pictured here.
And Telefunken…
…who brought an array of microphones with them for attendees to try..
Tunecore, providers of digital distribution services and more for artists made their MixCon debut as well.
All in all, another unforgettable MixCon.
