Now Cutting Vinyl in NYC: Alex Abrash Mastering Adds Neumann VMS-66 Lathe
A Neumann VMS-66 disc mastering lathe has just been added to New York City.
This pristine machine is in residence at Alex Abrash Mastering in the Long Island hamlet of Plainview, NY. AA Mastering will now be cutting vinyl at their facility, equipped with the VMS-66 lathe, Neumann VG-66 electronics, and a Neumann SX-74 cutterhead.
After an extensive search, Abrash located the lathe on the island of Jamaica. “It was in very good unmolested condition — a good place to start,” says Abrash, whose recent credits include extensive work for 180 Proof Records and Company Freak. “Chris Muth of Taloowa worked with me for about six weeks to do a complete rebuild, starting with recapping all the electronics, motor rebuild, head rebuild, all bearing changed, and a custom vacuum system built by Chris. Along with a complete audio and mechanical calibration, and now she cuts like new!
“If you have not had a chance to hear a freshly cut lacquer, it’s an amazing experience,” Abrash continues. “It’s true what they say about vinyl — it has a very special quality. It makes music sound like music.”
