Palm Mute Piano Launched – Finger-Dampened Virtual Instrument
Looking for a new twist on an old standby? You’ve just found one.
Paper Stone Instruments, a new Kontakt Library development company with some fresh ideas, has just launched Palm Mute Piano, a 2.6GB 64 note Kontakt instrument. The instrument is built around the principle of Palm Muting, which is achieved by placing a finger or palm on the string of the piano while striking the key – an effect that’s similar to the muted tone of more common palm muting techniques on guitar and bass, resulting in a unique and “stealthy” dampened tone.
Recorded in Paper Stone’s Studio 2, a 1400 sq. ft. converted cinema auditorium in the UK circa 1914, the company meticulously sampled their Danemann Grand Piano, a 1960 6’8″ Mahogany model chosen for its rich character and mellow tone.
Samples were recorded in short (staccato) long (sustain) and pedalled articulations at three velocity levels, with five microphones, in Close (mono), Stereo, and Room configurations.
The Palm Mute Piano is available for a special intro price of 22.99 Euro, or $29.88 at today’s exchange rates, until the end of May. From May forward, the price is 34.99 Euro, or $45.48.
