Perry Farrell, The Studio View: Unleashing Inspiration
Only one person on Earth gets to be Perry Farrell.
Perry himself enjoys that privilege on a daily basis, but the rest of us can get a taste. How? By experiencing this entertaining and info-packed SonicScoop video interview with him!
Perry Farrell is an unparalleled artist, because of his amazing voice and everything he’s brought to the world of music.
He’s levelled up yet again with the recently-released Perry Farrell—The Glitz; The Glamour Boxset, a 35-year solo retrospective of his life, music, and art outside of the work of Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros.
This nine-vinyl boxset serves up 68 tracks of pure Perry Farrell, in all his alt rock and innovative glory. Farrell fans will get an earful, including his first band, Psi Com, 2001’s Song Yet To Be Sung, Satellite Party’s ultra-excellent Ultra Payloaded (co-produced in 2007 with Steve Lillywhite and Nuno Bettencourt), plus 2018’s Kind Heaven.
There are also 11 specially commissioned, genre-twisting remixes on Glitz; Glamour, including the mesmerizing “Vast Visitation” with its recording of Jim Morrison. EDM collaborations also abound, including Maceo Plex, Groove Armada, UNKLE, Solomun, Booka Shade, Richard Norris, Francois K and The Avalanches.
We interviewed Farrell in his LA personal studio. Alongside him for a SonicScoop exclusive was his longtime audio engineer, Dustin Mosley. With credits including Nine Inch Nails, Zack de La Rocha, and Atticus Ross, Mosley shares pro insights on recording vocals, studio workflow, and much more.
In this Q&A, Farrell goes deep. He recounts:
- his most primal audio experience
- his evolution as a studio artist
