Neighborhood Advantages: Easy access to and from NYC, close to PATH train. Great restaurants/bars. We’re only blocks away from Hoboken’s main strips. There’s a rental facility and a technician on the premises. Also, there are stunning views of NYC. And for all the boys, there’s a gentlemen’s club across the street with even more stunning views.

Date of Birth: In 2001 I opened my own studio called Uncle Paulie Productions. After 10 years of recording out of my home, a friend of mine named Jeremy Comitas gave me a call and asked if I would be interested in taking over a few rooms in a suite he was renting named Stained Glass. We decided to work together and are currently known as Stained Glass Studios-NJ.

Facility Focus: We’re a full-service recording studio. We have experience in all types of music. There are digital DAW options and a beautiful selection of analog gear.

System Highlights: We have the convenience of having a hybrid setup. On the digital side of things, there’s a Pro Tools HD2 Accel system running off a Mac Pro 8-core with 12 gigs of RAM. Aurora AD16 interfaces running 32 analog and 32 digital ins and outs. Also, Logic Pro 9 with Apogee interfaces.

As far as analog, the studio houses a Studer A827 2-inch analog tape deck. There’s a nice collection of both modern and vintage outboard gear, and a 24-channel modified Soundcraft Ghost recording console. With our analog/digital setup we are able to offer our clients the best of both worlds in terms of audio.

Distinguishing Characteristics: I’d have to say the coolest and most interesting thing in the studio is the back wall in the control room. The control room was designed by Dan Zellman of NYC — he had us build a multiband diffusor wall/bass trap in the rear of the room. It has slotted wood from top to bottom. Behind that is another wall layered with carpet, insulation and then plywood. The ceiling above it has a one-foot opening in it going across the room.

This can be much better explained by Mr. Zellman, but what basically happens is when sound is played out of the monitors, the opening in the ceiling acts as a huge bass trap. Other frequencies are reflected off of the wood and pass through a multiband cloud that hangs over the mix position. This setup gave the room an amazingly smooth frequency response. It’s pleasant to work in and you can listen for hours with no ear fatigue.

Our live room has 16-foot wood-sloped ceilings, and a custom hardwood drum riser. Custom-made reflective wooden acoustic treatments are hung on the rear walls. There’s a large selection of 16 guitar amps and ten cabinets to choose from. Also, a John Bonham-sized Gretsch maple drum kit, a Yamaha recording custom kit and an SJC custom birch drum kit along with a collection of over a dozen snare drums.

The great Dan Zellman is best equipped to explain the special acoustical treatments of this Weehawken studio.

The building is on fire, you only have time to grab ONE thing to save, what is it? My Studer. Pultecs are a close second.
