RIP Reggie “Combat Jack” Ossé – Top Hip Hop Podcaster
SonicScoop was saddened to learn of the passing of Reggie Ossé, founder of the leading podcast on hip hop “The Combat Jack Show”. The cause was colon cancer.
Ossé was a former entertainment lawyer who represented the likes of Roc-A-Fella founder Damon Dash, members of Sean Combs’ Hitmen producer team, and prior to that was a veteran of Def Jam Records’ legal affairs department. But Ossé burned out on being a legal eagle, and went from putting people behind the mic to helming one himself with “The Combat Jack Show.”
After the series launched in 2010, “Combat Jack” began a steady rise to being the #1 hip hop podcast “on the air,” benefitting from Ossé’s working industry knowledge and the uniquely insightful interviews that resulted. Interview subjects spanned many of the biggest names in music, including Ice Cube, LL Cool J, members of Wu-Tang Clan, Just Blaze, and many more.
Besides the industry inside info, listening to “Combat Jack” could be a welcome respite from many of the tightly programmed podcasts that rule the charts. Ossé and his co-hosts would often dive into a wide range of topics before settling into the featured interview, followed by conversations that were priceless. “The Combat Jack Show” was the type of podcast where you didn’t want to miss a word, keeping you on the edge of your seat about what might come next.
Reggie Ossé showed how an audio path could be a rewarding career change from the grind of corporate life. His inimitable instincts for the art of the conversation will be deeply missed.
