A Revolutionary Breakthrough in Stereo Mic Recording

There are plenty of cool stereo mic techniques out there: M/S, XY, Blumlein… But what if you could change between them AFTER the recording session? Amazingly enough, as of this week, you can.

Austrian Audio’s free StereoCreator plugin allows you to take a stereo pair of mics and complete change its configuration after the fact, switching between some of the most popular and useful coincident stereo mic’ing techniques after the fact, and even tweaking their angle and placement.

Go from a tight, dry XY pattern to an open yet focused Mid-Side technique to a spacious Blumlein pair after the fact, with plenty of ability to further tweak the mic array for more width, more center, more space, and more.

Big thanks to Austrian Audio for sending these mics and helping us make this video possible. Their free StereoCreator plugin works with Austrian Audio OC818 mics, and should work with the very small number of other mics on the market with similar features.

Big thank to Chris Swist of Evenfall Studio for his contributions, as well as his wife Marcia Lehninger and son Willy Swist for their performances. Thanks also to Thanks also to guitarist Julián Restrepo.
