Dave Amlen Acquires Legacy Recording Studios’ 48th Street Facility, Forms Dual Location MSR Studios

On Friday, October 16th, David Amlen took control of Legacy Recording Studios’ flagship midtown location, merging it with Manhattan Sound Recording’s 36th street production facility. Combined, the two studios will assume the name MSR Studios.

A 25-year veteran of the New York City recording community, Amlen is the former owner of Sound On Sound Recording and a former partner in Legacy as a result of a 2005 merger between Sound On Sound and Right Track Recording.  The partnership dissolved in late 2008 and Amlen went on to found Manhattan Sound Recording.

The acquisition of Legacy’s two tracking rooms and one large format mix room expands on Manhattan Sound Recording’s services, which previously centered around post production, writing/composition, and small format mixing.

Immediate plans include a cosmetic renovation of the 48th street facilities along with a complete technical overhaul of the facility’s B Room, formerly owned and operated by Frank Filipetti.

Amlen will be retaining key staff including both the full assisting staff and the tech staff, which will continue to be under the direction of Chief Engineer Bradshaw Leigh.  Management and Operational responsibilities will be assumed by Manhattan Sound Recording General Manager Matt Carter, formerly of Legacy himself, while Alec Fellman will be staying on as Assistant Studio Manager.  Erin Preston-Retif will remain as Controller.
