Event Alert: “No-Input” Investigation at the Issue Project Room, 4/29

The NYC non-profit arts center Harvestworks is partnering with the Issue Project Room in Downtown Brooklyn to co-produce an event this weekend, dedicated to the “no-input mixing board phenomenon” – a style of sound art.

One of the evening's participants, the Brooklyn-based sound artist Bob Bellerue.

INVESTIGATE: no-input is happening this Sunday, April 29, from 6-10PM, and will comprise a panel as well as performances featuring Toshimaru Nakamura, Philip White, Bob Bellerue, Bonnie Jones, Gene Coleman and Phillip Stearns.

The event will be an in-depth investigation into the “no-input” style of sound art using internal mixer feedback to generate sound. The artform uses the audio mixer as an instrument offering a diverse palette for experimentation with feedback. Multiple channels, different configurations of inputs/outputs and external effects can further extend the range of obtainable timbres.

Presentations will feature no-input pioneer Toshimaru Nakamura who will be joined by the above-listed sound artists in a panel that will explore the limits of the sound-generating technique, its influence on the audience and how each artist has expanded their equipment to address stylistic concerns.

The panel will be followed by a performance with special guest composer/experimental musician Gene Coleman where participants will exhibit the their idiosyncratic approaches to controlling an instrument that defies control.
