In the Studio with Rudimental

Amir Amor and Piers Agget of Rudimental.

MusicTech published an interview this week featuring Rudimental, who have been collaborating with big players in the music industry since 2012. Their music has featured artists like John Newman, Foxes, Becky Hill, and Emeli Sandé. Amir Amor and Piers Agget of Rudimental share how they found their way into the spotlight. On top of that, they give MusicTech an in-depth tour of their studio and share the details of their creative process.

Amir came into possession of Rudimental’s current studio space 4 years before forming the group and was working as the in-house producer for his manager’s record label. He’d been writing, producing, and mixing all of his own music, which explains the top-notch quality of Rudimental’s first release Home.

Piers says that “Amir’s a bit of a scientist. We had a lot of good ideas written, and he had all these soundscapes that he’d built like a stamp collection. He’d been collecting samples and sounds for years, and his hard drive was probably one of the most precious things we could ever get. The marriage really worked – it was a connection bound by our love for live and electronic music and the environment we all grew up in.”

Rudimental’s studio consists of a variety of popular hardware synths that include the Nord Lead, refaced Prophet 12, Moog Sub 37, a Hammond B-3, a Roland Jupiter-80, and more. On top of all these synths, Rudimental have quite an impressive monitoring setup that consists of a pair of ADAM S4X-Hs, a KRK sub, and a pair of KEF Egg speakers.

I was surprised to see that Rudimental use Ableton, Logic, Fruity Loops, and Pro Tools, but Amir describes them as “different instruments.” I found this to be a unique way of looking at DAWs. It appears as though they take a very organic approach to making music, starting with jamming out in their studio, and then recording whichever good grooves they stumble upon.
