Nashville Event Alert: Marathon Direct-to-Disk Session at Welcome to 1979 10th Birthday Bash

BBQ and beer would have been plenty to mark their 10th birthday, but Nashville studio Welcome to 1979 is going waaaaaaaaay beyond that.

On June 2, 2018 from 8 PM – midnight in an event that’s free and open to the public, the studio is hosting their 10-Year Anniversary party with an unprecedented feat: a marathon direct-to-disk recording session. Ten artists who have previously worked at 1979 will come back for a one-time-only direct-to-disk recording session that, according to the studio, has never been done before.

Laser focus will be essential by the Welcome to 1979 team during their 10th Anniversary fiesta. Everyone else can P A R T Y!!!

During a direct to disk recording, sound gets cut directly onto a lacquer disc in real-time while artists are performing, with no room for re-dos, edits, or punch-ins. At the 1979 party two discs will be cut – one for each side of the vinyl release. Once the cutting process has started on one side, it cannot be stopped until that side is completed.

Each artist or group will be setup to perform in various locations around the studio. Once it’s their turn, they will perform one song as the lacquer is getting cut, forever etching their sounds onto the disc.

Staff at Welcome to 1979 will pass out tickets at the doors redeemable for one free vinyl record available to pick up once the vinyl has been pressed. Kindercore Vinyl will be pressing a batch of 450 translucent gold records, available for pickup at Welcome to 1979 a few weeks after the event. Plus, one golden ticket will be stashed in a record redeemable for a free day of studio time.

Some of the artists performing include Applewood Road’s Amber Rubarth, neo-soul powerhouse Alanna Royale, rising songwriter Kyle Daniel, Mary Bragg and Becky Warren’s new super group The Reckless Electric, and country superstar Frank Foster.

And now a little history: Welcome to 1979 found its home in a former record-pressing plant in West Nashville in 2008. Since the studio’s inception, owners Chris and Yoli Mara have put their own spin on the facilities with the addition of a tape machine restoration company, a vinyl-mastering suite, an electroplating facility, and, most recently, a slide.
