Sear Sound Records Rufus Wainwright, Five For Fighting, Opens Studio D

Rufus Wainwright recorded his forthcoming album, All Days Are Nights: Songs for Lulu, at NYC’s Sear Sound. Wainwright recorded on five pianos set up in Studio C — two 7′ Yamahas, Sear’s Steinway D and Steinway C, and a concert grand.

The album, which comes out April 20 in the U.S. on Universal/Decca, was self-produced, and recorded by Tom Schick, using the Avalon/Sear custom console. David Schoenweter assisted. (Look out for an expanded story on these sessions right here on SonicScoop!)

Sear Sound recently announced the opening of a new studio, built around another of its custom consoles. Sear Sound’s new Studio D has been designed for mixing, editing, pre-production/writing, and Moog sessions, and features Walter Sear’s own custom 12-channel vacuum tube console, Studer tape recorders, Pro Tools HD, Logic Studio and Moog Modular Synthesizer (one of the first ever produced), along with an array of keyboards and two Moog Theremins.

In other recent sessions at Sear Sound: John Ondrasik, who performs as Five for Fighting, recorded his released album, Slice, in Studio C. The album was produced by Ondrasik, with engineer Ross Peterson who was assisted by Schoenwetter and Chris Allen. Five for Fighting will tour throughout March to support Slice, and will play NYC’s Grand Ballroom March 4.

Two Norah Jones concert recordings were mixed in Sear’s Studio A using the Neve 8038 console. Tom Schick mixed, with Eli Wolf producing for Blue Note.

Jazz pianist Hank Jones and bassist Charlie Haden tracked a new album in Studio C for Universal/Paris, with Jay Newland engineering; Kirk Whalum tracking with producer Matt Pierson and engineer James Farber; and Jacky Terrasson tracking a new record for Concord Records with Sear engineer Chris Allen. Sear also hosted sessions with Steve Gadd, Philip Glass, and Joanna Newsom.
