AES NY 2019 Program Expands: Grandmaster Flash, EDM, Hip Hop, Immersive & More – October 16-19

Autumn is approaching in the Northeast, which means soon the sweet sound of falling leaves will gently brush the Javits Center roof.

Inside, the sonics will be even sweeter: The unmistakable tones of the Audio Engineering Society’s (AES) 147Th Pro Audio Convention, taking place in New York City, October 16-19 (exhibits October 16-18).

While the physical size of the show waxes and wanes, there’s no question that the AES committees always give 100% to put on a productive, informative and fun show. For 2019, there is another heavy slate of special tracks, technical programs, papers, engineering briefs and special events planned.

The one and only Grandmaster Flash keynotes the 147th AES on Wednesday, October 16.

The opening ceremonies on Wednesday, October 16 from 12-1:30, kick the convention off in style, highlighted by a keynote speech by hip hop pioneer Grandmaster Flash. Later on that day, “The Making of Sheryl Crow’s ‘Threads’”, featuring mixer/engineer Dave O’Donnell will analyze the making of the star singer’s newest record. On Thursday, another highlight event is held by SonicScoop contributor Paul “Willie Green” Womack, “Chopped and Looped—Inside the Art of Sampling for Hip Hop.” Another highlight event is on Friday, “The Past, Present and Future of the Legendary Quad Building” moderated by Prince Charles Alexander, with Quad’s Ricky Hosn and Carla Springer, Pro Audio Design’s Dave Malekpour, and producer/engineer/DJ DG. See all events here.

Special tracks are even more comprehensive than ever, with 16 in all for 2019. A notable new addition is the New York Electronic Dance Music Track, taking place Thursday, October 17. Multi-platinum/GRAMMY-winning mix engineer (and MixCon presenter) Ariel Borujow, starts it by breaking down a full mix of an electronic music track in the “Mixing EDM Masterclass.” Borujow will discuss all aspects of his approach, from his mindset and communication with the client to the techniques that go into creating the feel while keeping the client’s vision of the production. EDM Track events continue with the session “The Art & Origins of Sampling: From Vinyl to DAW; From Hip-Hop to Dance Music,” as Nate Mars from the Electronic Music Collective discusses the fundamentals of the sampling art form used not just by electronic musicians but also by all producers and DJs. After that, Rick Snoman, award-winning remixer, producer and author of the industry standard textbook Dance Music Manual, will walk attendees through the art of a remix.

Other special tracks are far-ranging, including Audio Builders, Audio for Cinema, Game Audio, Hip Hop and R&B, Networked Audio, Student and Career Development, and more. Visit here for the full roster of special tracks.

The AES’ 147th Pro Audio Convention runs from October 16-19 in NYC.

In what promises to be an intensive Expo, there are far too many highlights to list. In all, over 300 brands will be exhibiting on the showroom floor, with 330+ all access program sessions taking place throughout the Javits. The full calendar shows just how busy attendees can be, with several tough choices to make over the four days.
